I often get into preposterous arguments with friends of mine who can't imagine that music can function as a political force (well, my friend is a classic political scientist, so go figure). And you know, Bad Brains from Washington DC started in 1977, and worked reggae and jazz into their punk sound. So yeah, this is definitely a repressed history--thanks for telling the story. I also really love The Mars Volta, esp Frances the Mute, for bringing that Santana-sound into the "white" genre of prog rock. I'm a professor, and a blogger, and my work focuses primarily on border stuff in San Diego-Tijuana (like the border fence), and I want to start writing more about mexican punk--but I know nothing so far.
